Pleated curtains in the interior: practical and beautiful

Nowadays when nonstandard interior solutions and minimalism are in fashion, pleated curtains have become one of the most popular variants of window decoration. Pleated curtains look great on plastic windows, they easily fit into non-standard openings and can be very different: strict and romantic, plain and patterned, dense and transparent.

If you experiment with their colors and textures, you can always choose a model that is suitable for a particular interior style. Let's look at how they are used in the interiors of different rooms.

Externally, pleated curtains are very similar to blinds - laconic form, segmented structure. But when you look at it, you can see that the characteristic aluminum or plastic lamellae are absent, their place is taken by corrugated paper or fabric.

It is worth noting that this type of window decoration is more aesthetic and convenient, because it has much more options for management, and allows you to make not only rectangular frames but also arched ones.

Types

In the photo pleated curtains in three variants at once: tensioned, free-hanging and fixed.

The main advantage of plissé is that they can be made for frames of different complexity and arrangement: triangular, semi-circular, square, round, and broken. Depending on the type of construction and fixing, systems are divided into several types: tensioned, free-hanging, and fixed.

1. Tensioned system can be successfully used for sloping windows. In addition, this system can be equipped with side rails, to avoid gaps and sagging, as well as a tighter fit to the glass. It is represented by two mounting options:

  • tension strands fix each profile, which allows you to adjust the light in the room; thus, you can open the lower or upper edge of the glass pane by moving one or two profiles at the same time;
  • the second scenario consists in attaching one of the profiles to the frame; in this way, only one profile is clamped by the tensioning strands and can be moved along them in parallel with the glass.
2. The free-hanging system has a leaf with a fixed upper edge and a lower edge falling along with the frame, which can move up and down freely. It makes sense to mount the system on vertical blinds and opening sashes.
3. Fixed is suitable for the design of irregularly shaped windows. It continuously closes the window and is not adjustable at all.

Mounting and control methods

Pleated curtains are fixed not only on modern plastic windows but also on wooden, panoramic, and attic ones. Adjustment of the luminous flux is carried out in several ways.
There are systems with an electric drive. It is also possible to raise and lower the blade by rope, chain, or leash manually.

Day-night systems

The photo shows the pleated curtains with a day-night system. This model allows you to easily regulate the degree of light in the room.

This type is noticeably distinguished by the use of two fabrics at once: translucent and dense. Three or four profiles are used in parallel. The system assumes several control scenarios.

1 You can lower both the thick and the transparent curtains completely. In this way, a pleasant semi-darkness will prevail in the room during the daytime, suitable for daytime sleep.
2 Raise the opaque cloth, leaving the luminous one as a window decoration. This option is convenient during the day, limiting extraneous attention and letting the light in.

Ideas for the kitchen

Since the kitchen is a specific room, with an atmosphere full of smells of cooking and hovering in the air humid vapors, the choice of pleated curtains for it should be guided by certain rules.
The material for making pleated curtains can be anything. Most budgetary options are even made of thick paper. But for the kitchen, you need to choose models made of polyester or blended fabrics treated with special antibacterial impregnation. Such curtains not only almost do not get dirty, but they are also fireproof.

The most convenient option for the kitchen is tension curtains, fixed directly on the sashes and tight to them. Such fixing allows unrestricted use of all elements of the window design and leaves the window sill free.

To decorate the kitchen traditionally use plisse with horizontal folds, but vertical models are not inferior to them in functionality and look no less interesting. An additional bonus - vertical pleats visually raise ceilings.

The door leading to the balcony or loggia, combined with the kitchen, also needs decoration. It can be decorated either with a short pleated curtain covering only the glass part of the door, or with a long plissé curtain stretched to the full height of the door. A set consisting of a long pleated curtain on the door and the same, but short up to the window sill curtains on the windows looks very stylish and modern.

Ideas for the living room

In its essence, pleated curtains are another kind of blind. So at first glance, they may seem too laconic for a living room - a room that just has to be cozy and disposing to a pleasant pastime. In fact, the living room with pleated fabric blinds looks no less cozy than with classic curtains. Let's consider some features of their use in the living room:

Plissé curtains are perfectly combined with drapes and curtains. In the living room and the hall such curtain ensembles look especially relevant.

For the living room, it is better to buy pleated curtains, the height of which is adjustable at the top and bottom. They are more convenient to control the natural daylight.

It is better that they be monochromatic. In the living room, as a rule, you have to place many different decorative and functional objects, and motley curtains with a lot of small horizontal folds, will make the interior too saturated.

Such naive "rustic" styles as chic and Provence are difficult to imagine without delicate floral prints on curtains. Therefore it is allowed to make an exception for them and pick up pleated fabric with a romantic floral pattern.

The direction of pleats-plisse can be not only horizontal but also vertical. It is considered that curtains with horizontal pleats visually expand the walls and are suitable for decorating narrow windows, and vertical models visually raise the ceiling and are more suitable for small rooms.

If you want to give the atmosphere of the room status, decorate the window with curtains of deep rich color (wet asphalt, dark blue, burgundy, olive) from dense silk or satin. If the emphasis is on the airiness of the interior, hang a pleated curtain and transparent organza in pastel colors.

In halls, decorated in minimalist or avant-garde styles, pleated curtains may be used as a separate "creative unit". The main condition is that their color should echo the key colors of the interior.

Ideas for the bedroom

Providing comfortable shade for sleep and rest is the main requirement for curtains in the bedroom, and plisé curtains fully meet it. Let's consider the main ideas for decorating the bedroom with them.

Bedrooms, especially in country houses are very often located in attics, which are characterized by non-standard windows. Plissé curtains are the only curtains that can fit into both wall and ceiling window aperture of the fanciest configuration and at the same time not to hide, but on the contrary, to emphasize its geometric shape.

The fabric plissé blinds made of blackout material allow achieving one hundred percent blackout. So that the windows in the daytime, when the curtains are raised, do not seem bare, they can be further decorated with translucent curtains.

The most convenient way to regulate the light is with curtains of the "day-night" type. They do not need a partner curtain. During the day the window is closed by a translucent fabric, and at night - by a thick curtain, which can also be made of blackout fabric.

An interesting solution for any bedroom is pleated curtains with photoprinting. The image of the starry sky, seascape or forest glade will help to create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom.

Ideas for the balcony

The main task of curtains on the balcony is to protect it from the bright sunlight and at the same time not to overload the rather modest-sized space. Plissé blinds cope with it perfectly. Although it is impossible to spoil the interior of the balcony or loggia with such curtains, it is worthwhile to use some simple tips when choosing them.

If the balcony overlooks the sunny side, then pay attention to plissé with mother-of-pearl or metallized coating. Such a fabric not only shades the room, but also reflects sunlight. It does not allow the air to heat up and even in the heat of summer keeps both the balcony and the adjacent room cool.

The width of standard balconies does not exceed 1.5 meters, so it is preferable to mount pleated curtains on its windows separately on each leaf. Such mounting is the most compact and does not "eat up" the space.

For balconies and loggias, it is better to choose plissé curtains, which open and close both at the bottom and at the top. This design allows you to protect the room from prying eyes, not darkening the space

The brightness of the room adjacent to the balcony directly depends on what curtains are on it. Therefore they should not be too dark and dense.

Plissé blinds fit well into modern interior styles thanks to the possibility to apply various patterns on the fabric surface and an abundance of colors. They are comfortable, practical and easy to care for. On top of that they perfectly match many kinds of curtains and drapes.
